Online matrimony has made finding a life partner more accessible than ever. But like all online platforms, it requires awareness. This guide walks you through the key safety practices that protect you while still allowing genuine connections to form.
Red Flags in Matrimony Profiles
- Requests money early: Anyone who asks for financial help — even a small amount — before you've met in person is a red flag. No genuine matrimony prospect will need money from you.
- Too-perfect profile with vague details: A profile that is suspiciously good-looking, with few specific details and a very generic "About Me," may be using stolen photos.
- Claims of immediate love or connection: Moving too fast emotionally, expressing "love" within days, is a common manipulation tactic.
- Resists video calls: A genuine person will be comfortable doing a video call before an in-person meeting. Persistent refusal is a red flag.
- Contact details shared too quickly: Pushing to move off the platform to WhatsApp or phone immediately bypasses safety mechanisms.
- Education/occupation details don't add up: "I am a doctor in the US but can't do a video call" or education claims with no details are common fraud patterns.
How to Verify a Profile
- Google reverse image search: Save the profile photo and run it through Google Images. If it appears on multiple unrelated profiles, it's stolen.
- Ask for a real-time selfie: Ask the person to send a photo holding a specific object or making a specific gesture. A fraudster with stolen photos cannot do this.
- Video call before meeting: A 10-minute video call confirms the person is who they claim to be. VivahSphurthi members are expected to be willing to video call before in-person meetings.
- Search their name and phone number: A quick internet search can sometimes surface complaints or red flags that others have reported.
- Check for VivahSphurthi verification badge: Profiles with email, mobile, and document verification have been through additional checks by our team.
Safe First Meeting Guidelines
- Meet in a public place: Coffee shop, restaurant, or mall — somewhere busy with other people around. Never at a private residence for a first meeting.
- Tell someone where you're going: Share the person's name, profile ID, meeting location, and expected return time with a trusted family member or friend.
- Arrange your own transport: Drive yourself or use a ride-hailing service. Do not accept rides from someone you haven't yet established trust with.
- Keep the first meeting short: 1–2 hours in a public place is ideal. Long first meetings at unfamiliar locations increase risk.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels wrong, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Your safety is more important than politeness.
Information to Protect
Do not share these before you have established genuine trust over time:
- Your exact home address
- Financial details (bank account, salary proof, credit card numbers)
- Aadhaar or PAN number
- Photos that you wouldn't be comfortable with being made public
- Location tracking access on your phone
